Gujarat paid rich tributes to the Father of Nation on his 136th anniversary by hosting a number of functions at his birthplace at Porbandar, at Ahmedabad. In several parts of the State, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday was celebrated as ''Retia Baaras'', the twelfth lunar day in the month of Bhadar. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Jaipal Reddy flew down to Porbandar to attend an all-religion prayer meeting at Mahatma's birthplace at Kirti Mandir. Mr Reddy said the Centre planned to convert a number of memorials for the Mahatma in India and also in Pakistan, as heritage centres at a cost of Rs 25-crore. He said talks are on with his Pakistani counterpart in this regard. Three memorials are proposed to be set up in Gujarat alone, at Porbandar, Ahmedabad and Dandi. Dandi is famous for the Mahatma's salt satyagraha.
