Gujarat is witnessing an upswing in the tourism sector, which has already seen arrival of 25,000 foreign tourists in the State in the first half of 2006, being promoted as 'Tourism Year'. In the first six months 2006, 25,000 foreign tourists have already visited the State as compared to 4,650 in 2004-05. Gujarat Tourism Minister said that there was a 25 per cent increase in the number of NRIs visiting Gujarat as compared to 2004-05 and the figure for domestic tourists rose by 32 per cent in the same period. The Government was expecting a large number of tourists during the popular 'Navratri Mahotsav' expected to be held from September 23 to October 1 in Gandhingar.
