Underground water leakage through oil pipes in Mehsana creates flood-like situation
Friday, November 30, 2007
Mehsana (Gujarat), Nov 29 (ANI): Underground water is gushing out from oil pipelines in few areas in Gujarat over the past five days, causing flood-like situation.
People are facing intense hardships as farmlands in Gamanpura village of Mehsana district has got filled with knee-deep water that is continuously gushing out of pipelines of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).
ONGC officials claim the tests have revealed that no emission of any harmful gases or chemicals have taken place during the leakage.
"We have adopted a multi-fold strategy. We are going for direct intervention in the sewer. We are going to cap this well today and divert the flow of air from the affected tube well to its well side so that there is no inconvenience to the local people," said A K Gupta, Executive Director of the ONGC.
"We are monitoring the air that is blowing with sand on an hourly basis. There is no hazardous gas either carbon dioxide or sulphur dioxide," he added.
Though ONGC is trying to block the flow of underground water, the situation is not yet under control according to the locals.
Around 14 to 15 water tankers have been placed for the villagers and food arrangements have also been made by the ONGC. (ANI) --MP
Individuals with criminal records in Gujarat poll fray
Thursday, November 29, 2007
Rajkot, Nov.29 (ANI): With the Assembly elections in Gujarat less than a fortnight away, political parties in the state are actively promoting the credentials of their candidates, turning a blind eye to the fact that some of them have a criminal background.
Be it the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party or the opposition Congress Party, it seems just everybody and anybody is welcome to contest provided he or she can ensure a win in the elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has allowed two of its state legislators to contest again, knowing fully well that they spent a long time behind bars in the recent past.
Kantilal Amritiya, a sitting MLA from the Morbi constituency, has managed to get a ticket again despite having been sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with a murder case. Amritiya is an accused in the murder of Prakash Raveshiya, a councillor, and was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Gondal Court in 2005. He, however, has been given a clean chit by the Gujarat High Court.
Amritiya was lodged in the Sabarmati Jail, but today is busy campaigning in Morbi.
"I was innocent right from the beginning and was wrongly framed in that murder case. After spending a good time in the jail, I came to Morbi and have realised that people still have a lot of faith in me. So, I am contesting the elections from here," Kantilal said.
"I am sure I will win. If I would win, I will make Morbi world famous through business opportunities and will make sure that the water problem never exists," he added.
Meanwhile, the Congress has given its ticket to Jayantibhai Patel and has contended that the tag of criminal on BJP candidate Amritiya may favour it.
"How can a voter trust on someone who is in jail for murder charges? Last time, when he contested the election, he was there with that murder charge. Then, he was went to jail doing nothing for Morbi. This time too, it is not known whether he will be here or in jail again, as the case might be referred to the Supreme Court," said Jayantibhai Patel, the Congress candidate for the Morbi constituency.
Jairajsinh Jadeja, another sitting BJP MLA from Gondal in Rajkot District, is also a candidate worth attention.
Jadeja was serving a jail term in connection with two murder cases until he managed to seek bail from the Supreme Court after the election dates were announced.
The Congress party too has patronised candidates with criminal background like Vithal Radadiya.
Wielding both muscle and money power, Radadiya has filed his nomination for the upcoming elections.
Radadiya rubbishes all allegations against him.
"I have neither killed anyone nor cut anyone's throat. I am charged in only those cases filed by officers whom I have hit and slapped on the face as they were not performing the public duties they were assigned, and they deserved it. In those cases, I have got verdicts in my favour. So, there are no charges on me," claimed Radadiya.
In total, 742 candidates-684(males) and 58 (females)--will be seeking election to the 182-member Gujarat Assembly.
National parties will be represented by 286 candidates-258 (males) and 28 (females) in the two-phased elections scheduled for December 11 and 16. (ANI) --MP
Gujarat polls: No Muslim did enough work to get BJP ticket, says Sushma Swaraj
Surat/Maninagar, Nov 28 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj today said that no leader from the minorities has worked to the extent that would entitle them to get a party ticket for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Gujarat.
"The people from minorities have not done enough work for the BJP that would make them eligible for ticket," said Sushma.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination for the upcoming elections from Maninagar.
"People have seen my work and have no doubts in their mind (about me), The elections in Gujarat this year is different from those held earlier," Modi said after filing his nominations at electoral office here.
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dinsha J Patel also filed his nomination.
"I am sure that the Congress in Gujarat will get 115 to 120 seats," said Patel.
The BJP has substantially raised the number of female contestants, giving tickets to 13 women in the first phase of the polls to the Gujarat legislature, compared to the overall dozen in the previous polls.
Over 36 million voters will elect the 182-member assembly in Gujarat as the term of the state's legislative assembly is due to expire on December 26. The first phase of polling is scheduled on December 11. (ANI) --MP
Narendra Modi files nomination papers from Maninagar
Wednesday, November 28, 2007
Ahmedabad, Nov 28 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi filed his nomination papers from Maninagar constituency here today.
Modi, who is contesting for the second time from Maninagar, was accompanied by state unit BJP President Purshottam Rupala and party MP Harin Pathak.
"This election in Gujarat is different from those held earlier. Normally, it is the political parties or the media which sets the agenda. However, in Gujarat the agenda for the elections would be set by its 5.5 crore people and not by any political party or the media," Modi said after he had filed his papers.
Speaking about the 2002 Gujarat Assembly polls when the party managed to win 127 seats while the Congress party was able to win only 51 seats, he said, "In 2002 when I fought the elections, not many people were acquainted with me or my work. But now the people have seen my work and have no doubts about me."
The Janata Dal (United) and independents won two seats each.
Speaking on the development in Gujarat, Modi said, "I will ensure that Gujarat achieves the level of development that is seen in developed countries."
"In democracy elections are a festival. We all are now celebrating the festival of democracy. The BJP while asking the people to vote for it will try to reach out to them. The BJP will familiarise the people with its style of functioning and ask them to support it in the elections," he added.
From Congress, Union Minister Dinsha Patel also filed its nomination papers. He is being nominated from this constituency for the first time.
Earlier, Patel won five Assembly elections and four Lok Sabha elections from Gujarat.
The first phase of elections in Gujarat will be held on December 11 and second phase on December 16. The counting of votes will take place on December 23.

Sundernagar faces acute water crisis
Sundernagar (Gujarat), Nov 28 (ANI): The residents of Sundernagar in Gujarat are facing an acute water crisis, with water being available for just an hour, that too in four days.
Social activists blame the administration for this crisis.
"We do not have proper water management facilities. Water mismanagement is responsible for such poor condition in the district. The government talks about development but if basic necessities are not up to the mark then where is the development," said, Arvind Aacharya, a social worker and an Ex-MLA of Surendranagar.
So acute is the crisis, that even wells are drying up and the residents have to travel miles to access he nearest tube well.
"Our district suffers from a water crisis. Being a woman, I can understand how tough it is for a woman to fetch water from a stretch of two km," said Tripti Shukla.
Though the State Government is providing water through tankers on a weekly basis, the water is untreated leaving over 165,000 people exposed to severe health problems.
Though the 664-village-strong region has been brought within the ambit of the multi-billion-rupee Narmada river project, the country's biggest, still a million people of the region are experiencing acute water shortage.
Gujarat is entitled to get 9.0 million acre feet water from the Narmada Sardar Sarovar Project for its 8,215 villages and 135 towns and cities.
Analysts have predicted that drought and an increasing population will compound water scarcity. They want the government to focus on serious water management. (ANI) --MP
Narendra Modi says he will protect Taslima Nasreen
Bhavnagar(Gujarat), Nov 27(ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said that he is ready to protect Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen if the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre was unable to provide her adequate protection.
The noted and controversial author has been almost on a run for the last few days, and is made to shift from one place to another. Presently, she has been shifted to an undisclosed location in the national capital after her brief stay at the Rajasthan House.
Taking responsibility of protecting her, Modi today said, "If the Centre is unable to protect Taslima, then it can send her to Gujarat. I have the courage to protect her."
"Taslima has been courageous in speaking out against fundamentalists," Modi said at an election rally in Botad, adding that he feared that the Centre would try to send her to another country.
Criticising the UPA Government for being unable to stop Bangladeshi infiltration, he said that now their political partners, Left parties, have forced Taslima to flee West Bengal overnight.
Taslima arrived in the national capital on Friday evening after being taken to Jaipur from Kolkata following protest by people belonging to the minority community.
The BJP, on Sunday, had demanded a political refugee status for Taslima.
Taslima's visa to stay in India is valid till February 17, 2008, and she has been living in exile for more than ten years.
Since the 1990s, she has faced numerous threats from Islamic groups for her writings. Recently, activists of Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) attacked her at a book release function in Hyderabad.
The European Parliament awarded her the Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought in 1994. (ANI) --MP

BJP's election campaign in Gujarat runs into controversy
Tuesday, November 27, 2007
Surat/Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Nov 27 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) election campaign in Gujarat has got embroiled in a controversy.
It all began when party activists were given stoles embossed with the figure of the BJP's Member of Parliament from Surat constituency.
Earlier, the local media had reported that lawmaker Kashiram Rana, a former Central Minister was excluded from party's publicity blitzkrieg.
However, Rana downplayed the incident saying he was not involved with the party's election campaign.
"Nobody has asked me about using my picture on the scarf and particularly when I have not been told about the election campaign. Nobody has taken my view on the election strategy," Rana said.
The Congress is too not without it share of worries over picking the right candidate in many constituencies.
Some of the aspiring Congress candidates lamented that locals who knew the pulse of the people were denied tickets.
"The candidate, who has been given ticket, has nothing to do with Khadia area. Workers of Khadia have worked hard in the last 15 years and brought the party to this position. We demand that there should be local candidate, who has worked here," said Jagat Shukla, a candidate.
The Congress has given ticket to Chetan Rawal in Khadia constituency. The elections in Khadia are slated for December 16, in the second phase of polling.
The BJP managed to win 127 seats, while the Congress party was able to win only 51 seats in the 2002 Gujarat Assembly polls. The Janata Dal (United) and independents won two seats each.

Keshubhai Patel refuses to campaign for BJP in Gujarat
Sunday, November 25, 2007
Rajkot (Gujarat), Nov 25 (ANI): Sulking former Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel has opted out of campaign for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the State Assembly elections in Gujarat next month.
A dissident BJP leader in Saurashtra region, who was denied BJP ticket for his proximity to Patel, said the party would face a tough time defending 38 of the 58 seats it won in the 2002 polls in its stronghold, the Kutch-Saurashtra region.
"There will be tremendous difference this time," said Tapubhai Limbasiya, a dissident BJP leader in Rajkot.
Based on his observations during his visit to the region, Limbasiya said: "I can say with surety that Congress will get at least 32 seats from Saurashtra."
Meanwhile, the Congress is buoyant with the turnaround of events after Keshubhai Patel's son, Bharat Patel, also declined BJP's offer for a berth in the State polls.
"Congress will be benefited especially in Saurashtra. By using names of Keshubhai Patel we can benefit a lot and will at least get 40 seats in the region," said Vithal Radadiya, a Congress leader.
Radadiya had recently organised a rally in Dhoraji, which was graced by no other than Keshubhai Patel.
Despite no love lost between Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Keshubahi Patel, the BJP believes that he would not do anything that would harm the party.
"I know his health may not permit him to go out and campaign, but still his blessings and good wishes will always be there for BJP," said S S Ahluwalia, a senior BJP leader.
The two-time Gujarat Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel had to hand over the power to firebrand Narendra Modi in October 2001.
Keshubhai Patel, who still nurses the idea to become Gujarat Chief Minister, is livid with the working style of Modi, and also with the fact that deputies close to him are meted out a cold shoulder by Modi.
Six BJP MLAs -- Dhiru Gajera (Surat), Bechar Bhadani, Bavku Unghad, Balu Tanti, Gopal Dhua and Narendrasinh Jadeja -- have resigned from the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, as well as from the primary membership of the BJP.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi who is the star campaigner for the BJP, has often been accused by human right activists of fomenting communal violence in Gujarat before the 2002 State Assembly elections.
Over 36 million voters will elect the 182-member Assembly in Gujarat as the term of the State's Legislative Assembly is due to expire on December 26.

Congress' poll campaign goes hi-tech in Gujarat
Wednesday, November 21, 2007
Ahmedabad, Nov 21 (ANI): The Congress party in Gujarat has taken to video canvassing in a bid to reach out to voters of the state ahead of the next month's elections.
The party has hired small vans with LCD screens to move across remote areas of the state to highlight the party's achievements.
"The idea is to reach out to remote villages, where there is no cable connection or television and other means of campaigning cannot reach them. These video vans will go there and impart UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi's message," said Rohit Patel, a party worker.
The canvassing will also highlight the failures of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
"We aim to apprise the people about the false promises that the BJP has made to voters. This type of campaign will help even illiterates comprehend the ground situation. We are trying to reach out to various sections of people including women and traders," said Manish Doshi, a party campaigner.

Sunday, November 18, 2007
Ahmedabad, Nov 17 (ANI): Six Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs today submitted their resignations from the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, as well as from the primary membership of the party, bringing to fore the dissension in the party.
The MLAs, who resigned are -- Dhiru Gajera (Surat), Bechar Bhadani, Bavku Unghad, Balu Tanti, Gopal Dhua and Narendrasinh Jadeja.
They met Assembly Speaker Mangaldas Patel and submitted their resignation letters.
Gajera, Bhadani, Unghad and Tanti were recently suspended from the party for dissident activities, while BJP was yet to take action against the other two.
All the six have reportedly decided to join Congress party and contest Gujarat Assembly elections scheduled for next month on Congress tickets.
The elections are to be held in two phases. The first phase of polling for 87 constituencies will take place on December 11. The remaining 95 seats will go to polls on December 16.
Elaborate arrangements have been made by the Election Commission to conduct polls fairly.
In the run up to the two-phase polling, political activities have started gaining momentum, particularly after the Tehelka sting operations related to 2002 post Godhra riots, with the BJP and the Congress trading charges and counter-charges against each other.
Counting of votes for the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will take place on December 23.

`I am not a pessimist, asserts Narendra Modi ahead of Gujarat polls
Saturday, November 17, 2007
Ahmedabad, Nov.17 (ANI): With elections less than a month away in Gujarat, Chief Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that he is not a pessimist, and believes that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win the two-phased polls.
Speaking in an exclusive interview to ANI, Modi dwelled on a number of issues while declaring himself the future of Gujarat.
Rubbishing surveys that are predicting his eminent defeat in the assembly elections, Modi reiterated that the development of Gujarat would be his top priority after being re-elected.
"I do not believe that the elections decide the fate of a particular individual and I am not a pessimistic person. I am associated with the future of Gujarat. I want the best for my state, hold it in esteem, importance, and therefore, I do not waste my time thinking about consequences. This is an election in which neither the political parties are setting agenda nor the media is doing so, but an election where the agenda has been set by the people of Gujarat, on what would be the future of Gujarat and its development. The parties which would not follow this agenda would be voted out by the people of the state," declared Modi.
To posers about his adversaries and continuous criticism of his tenure, Modi said that such people could not accept the fact that Gujarat is developing and the rate with which it has achieved so much in the recent years.
"For the past five years, Modi has been attacked. People who could not acknowledge the development of Gujarat are trying to fire upon me time and again and defame Gujarat. They can try whatever seems possible to them, but Gujarat won't be defeated. I even have the same mantra in this election 'Gujarat will win' now," confided Modi.
"Why would we be defeated since we are moving ahead with the aim of making Gujarat win. Nobody can defeat Gujarat," added Modi.
He, however, minced no words in condemning the opposition Congress on various issues like its policies, its leadership and even its drive of creating communalism in the name of reservations.
"Congress has no leader and it has not even cleared its policy in the elections. They are only coming up with the slogan of 'Modi Hatao' and have nothing except the negative things to say and do. Such a party has no comparison with BJP," observed Modi.
While answering a question on endorsing Hindutva and communalism, he hit back at the Congress party by saying that "Yhey (Congressmen) have been the primary source of bringing the evil of communalism into the existence."
"When Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is saying that the minority has the first right on the banks and reserves of the country, isn't it a communal divide? The builders and the creator of India said that there would not be any reservation on the basis of religion, but Congress is making reservation on the basis of religion, isn't it a communal divide? When the Government itself appoints a Muslim constable in the Muslim-dominated region, isn't it a communal divide? The people, who are into committing these mistakes and practicing vote-bank politics, should be asked such questions. People who were responsible for dividing India and Pakistan on the basis of religion have no right to ask such questions," said Modi.
"The people who have been anti-Gujarat, have been trying for the past 30 years to impede the Narmada project, but the will-power of Gujarat has defeated all those people and moved ahead with the work of Narmada," reiterated Modi while answering on the much-politicised Narmada project.
He further claimed that his Government has worked in leaps and bounds to make that difference in Gujarat, and during his five years' tenure; he had brought Gujarat into the competitive world scenario.
"The entire world is discussing the progress of Gujarat. The growth rate of Gujarat is much more than any other Asian country. Gujarat has become the petro-capital of the country. Two CNG terminals are here. It (Gujarat) even has the world' biggest oil refineries. It has 2200-kilometer gas grid and various companies have now become multinational companies. All these have been considered as an idol in the country in terms of finance. At one time the State owed a revenue deficit of rupees 6700 crores but today the same is surplus. When an earthquake hit the Kutch region of Gujarat, it went back to normalcy within three years. There are so many things which one can say with pride about Gujarat," said the Chief Minister.
To a question about the priorities of his government, he responded by elaborating the quality of life index (QLI).
"We have taken a vow to serve the people of Gujarat. My priority is the betterment of the poor, every poor should be benefited by the development of Gujarat and the lifestyle of every human being should change for the better. I am hopeful of fulfilling the said promises and have been working with these dreams and would continue to do so," claimed Modi.
He described himself as a realist and an optimist.
"Narendra Modi lives in the present and would continue to do so. He never dreams or thinks blindly about the future and would never practice such blinkered views" he said.
The two-phase polling in Gujarat would be held on December 11 and 16, 2007 while the second and last round of polling in Himachal Pradesh is scheduled for December 19, 2007. (ANI) --MP Labels: Politics
Gujarat poll effect: Sonia lambasts BJP at AICC
New Delhi, Nov 17 (ANI): With Assembly elections in Gujarat scheduled for the middle of next month, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today targeted the BJP, saying Gandhian ideas, ideals and institutions are under threat in our own country, and added that "they are under sustained assault in the state of his birth itself and in other BJP-ruled states."
Addressing the All India Congress Committee (AICC) gathering here, Gandhi said, "No words are strong enough to condemn the BJP's attacks on our Prime Minister and on our party.
Virtually acknowledging that coalition politics is a compulsion of the current times, she said that working in a coalition did not mean that we give up our political space forever, and asserted the party would strive for achieving its past glory.
Accepting that coalition is a balance and a political challenge, she said, "But it is my firm view that the Congress should be taken to its glorious heights of the past. And the party was fully committed to running the UPA coalition in a totally harmonious manner."
Gandhi said as a democratic organisation, there was freedom for internal debate and discussion in the party "but this has to be kept in mind that till such a time that the party does not give its views on an issue, no one should give his opinion publicly, and once the party gives its views, it is not acceptable that anyone gives his individual different view."
As regards other office-bearers, she said they would reach out to the workers and be available to them and spend more time in districts and villages so that the party's activities are made vibrant.
Gandhi also said that there was too much talk about anti-incumbency which she felt was not that insurmountable if the party remained fully active and in touch with the people.
Dwelling on the outcome of the assembly polls in the last two years, Gandhi said, "The results showed that the party has goodwill among the people, but the organisation failed to convert it into votes." "In states like Bihar, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, party has tough challenges ahead and there was no alternative but to "stand on our own feet" by forgetting the differences", Gandhi added.
Speaking on Nandigram, Gandhi said that the party was unsparing of the CPI (M) in West Bengal when the draft resolution at the meeting condemned the culture of violence and the cult of armed cadres in Nandigram.
"All this is the natural outcome of a system where the interests of party cadres are placed above the interests of the people at large and the law and order machinery is not allowed to function professionally," a draft political resolution of the AICC said.
Commenting on Naxalism, she said the party has always viewed it as a question of law and order as well as a social issue.
"Therefore, to fight extremism, administration in tribal areas should be more sensitive and focused on development," she added.
Earlier, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh described it as the most serious challenge to internal security. (ANI) --MP Labels: Politics

Friday, November 16, 2007
Ahmedabad/Rajkot, Nov 15 (ANI): Congress has accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of misusing his powers to influence voters ahead of the Assembly polls, scheduled to be held in December.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists can be seen roaming in the city with framed pictures of Modi and distributing it in shops and showrooms.
Congress leaders feel that Modi is getting his framed picture distributed in every shop and showroom in the state to influence the voters.
"This is a murder of democracy. It is not wrong to advertise a party, but he is advertising himself and not his party by distributing his photo frames. This is not only wrong from Congress point of view but also from BJP point of view. He is misusing his powers," said Kashmira Nathwani, a Congress leader.
However, the businessmen seem to have no problem in keeping Modi's photograph in their shops.
"We thought that Modi has done good work for Gujarat. I am thinking of keeping his framed photograph at my office because this will also benefit Gujarat," said Mehul Damani, a merchant.
Meanwhile, in Ahmedabad some voters complained of absence of their names in the voter list and pointed out several mistakes in their voter identity cards.
"In the minority community people stay in a joint family and when they separate it gets difficult for them to get a ration card. So, because of lack of information and unavailability of ration card, it is getting difficult for them to get an election card," said Farzana Sheikh, Member of a voluntary organisation.
The first phase of polling for 87 constituencies will take place on December 11. The remaining 95 seats will go to polls on December 16.
Elaborate arrangements have been made by the Election Commission to conduct polls fairly.
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy, Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and S Y Quraishi visited the state to review the poll preparedness.
The Bharatiya Janata Party managed to win 127 seats, while the Congress party was able to win only 51 seats in the 2002 Gujarat Assembly polls. The Janata Dal (United) and independents won two seats each. (ANI) --MP Labels: Politics

Tuesday, November 13, 2007
Ahmedabad, Nov 13 (ANI): An Ahmedabad court today rejected the bail petitions of IPS officer D G Vanzara, and six others, who are the prime suspects in the 2005 Sohrabbudin Sheikh fake encounter case. Rejecting the bail pleas, the sessions court said that no bail could be granted to the main suspects in the case, as they are likely to influence the ongoing investigation or tamper with evidence. Two IPS officers of Gujarat Police-- Vanzara and Rajkumar Pandyan-- and one of Rajasthan Police-- Dinesh Kumar- allegedly executed the encounter in November 2005.
Sohrabuddin was reportedly gunned down on November 26, 2005 after being branded a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant by the Gujarat Police, allegedly trying to hatch a conspiracy to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The cops also allegedly killed Sohrabuddin's wife, Kausar Bi. On the Supreme Court's directive, the Gujarat Government had constituted a CID team under IGP Geetha Johri to investigate the case. Two UK Hawk jet trainers arrive in Jamnagar
Jamnagar (Gujarat), Nov 13 (ANI): The first two of the sixty-six Hawk jet trainers contracted for the Indian Air Force (IAF) landed in Jamnagar on Monday from the United Kingdom.
The aircraft were given an enthusiastic welcome on their maiden landing on Indian soil.
"The first two Advanced Hawk Jet trainer aircrafts have landed in Jamnagar, and will go to Bidar from here. These aircrafts will be delivered to our Air Force in Bidar," said R. K. Sharma, Air Officer Commanding, Jamnagar Air Force Base.
"A total of 66 Hawk-132 trainers are being purchased from BAE Systems, UK. Twenty four of them in flyaway condition will be supplied from UK and the remaining 42 will be manufactured in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bangalore. The arrival is in a phased manner," added Tarun Kumar Singh, Public Relations Officer, South-Western Air Command.
After a brief refuelling halt at Jamnagar, the two Hawks later flew to the Bidar airbase in Karnataka, which will be their designated main operating base.
India had signed a 1.45 billion dollars deal in 2004 to acquire 66 Hawks trainer aircrafts - 22 to be produced at the facility of BAE Systems and the rest by state-run HAL at its Bangalore unit under technology transfer.
India, which has the world's fourth-largest air force, needs trainer jets to help its young pilots learn to fly. They currently have to go straight from a basic jet to ageing Russian MiG-21 fighters, dubbed "flying coffins" because of frequent crashes.
The Hawk is the leading product in the market for aircraft that can serve as sophisticated trainers and light attack jets.
It is the mainstay trainer for the U.S. Navy and Britain's Royal Air Force. (ANI) - AY
Devotees in Gujarat allow cows and bulls to run over them in 'Gai Ghori' ritual
Monday, November 12, 2007
Dahod (Gujarat), Nov 11 (ANI): In a bizarre ritual, tribals in Gujarat allowed cows and bulls to run over them on Sunday. Cows are considered sacred and worshipped across the country, but this annual ritual in Dahod village, locally called 'Gai Ghori', is one of its own kind. The ritual is celebrated two-days after Diwali, the festival of lights, which also marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year. A day after Diwali, the village head presides over a prayer ritual. After offering prayers to the deity, the animals are coloured and decorated with peacock feathers. Cows and bulls are then driven over the devotees who lay face down on the ground. "This is an age old ritual, which has been taking place for hundreds of years," said Man Singh Bariya, head of the Village Council. The daredevil act is a way of expressing gratitude to the "Almighty" for fulfilling their wishes. The tribals also undertake the ordeal as an atonement of sins that they might have committed against the sacred animal. "This is a matter of tradition and faith. We respect cows and regard them as "mother". She cannot harm anyone," said Salra Behan Gohil, a resident. The festival, which is celebrated mainly by tribals, symbolises the victory of righteousness over evil and the lifting of spiritual darkness. (ANI) --MP
Non-government organisation collects medical waste for social cause
Saturday, November 10, 2007
Porbandar, Nov.10 (ANI): A non-government organisation in Gujarat has started collecting medical waste from various hospitals in and around Porbandar city thrice a week on alternate days here. Members of the Manav Seva Trust collects medical waste from 180 hospitals spread over an area of 100 kilometres with the help of its covered vans. The waste is disposed in an electric furnace on every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. "We collect medical waste from 180 hospitals in Porbandar on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We dispose it safely and thus we are preventing environment pollution," said Rajesh Bhandiya, a staff of the Bio-Medical Waste disposal project of the Manav Seva Trust.
The waste is disposed off as per the guidelines set by the State Environment Ministry at an incinerator built by the Trust in the suburb of Porbandar. "We have a special furnace that uses all the bio medical waste as fuel. This is reducing pollution in this place. Earlier doctors used to throw the medical waste in open areas which was dangerous," said Anil Karia, President of Manav Seva Trust. The service has influenced the city doctors who view the service of Manav Seva Trust as a big help and relief. "The bio-medical waste disposal project started by Manav Seva Trust is very beneficial for society. Earlier, doctors here had to wait for vehicles of pollution control board from Jamnagar to dispose their hospitals' medical waste. But now we have this trust to take care of it. Bio medical waste, if not disposed off properly, can cause various diseases and environment pollution," said Dr. Narender Jadeja, a practitioner in Porbandar.
Volunteers and the staff of Manav Seva Trust collect the medical waste in two bags-yellow and red. The two separate coloured bags are meant to denote bio-degradable and recyclable waste such as papers, plastic, metal glass and others. Bio-medical waste like cotton gauges and bandages, amputated body-parts, medicine wrappers, syringes, bottles and others are generated from health care establishments, and also from institutions such as blood banks, pathological laboratories and research institutes. Compared to municipal solid and industrial wastes, bio-medical waste is more dangerous due its infectious nature. As such bio-medical waste management is a special branch wherein the hazards and risks multiply and affect the community. (ANI) -AJ
Poverty-stricken housewife gives shelter to homeless cats in Gujarat
Porbandar, Nov.10 (ANI): A woman in Gujarat's Porbandar city has nurtured 15 cats as pets despite being a labourer's wife. The 45-year-old Gujarati housewife Rambhiben's empathy for the purring felines originated after an ailing alley cat took refuge at her humble veranda five years ago. After recovering from her illness the cat, perhaps touched by an unusual motherly care, continued to visit Rambhiben's home daily. Soon, many other cats in the neighbourhood also joined in to be fed with equal love.
Today, Rambhiben takes cares of as many as 15 cats and kittens. "I have 15 cats and I simply love all of them. They are part of my family," said Rambhiben, animal lover from Porbandar. Rambhiben somehow manages her home budget and the cats' expenditure within rupees 80 per day that her husband brings home every day. She is a mother of two boys aged 15 and 18 years. Every day Rambhiben offers them their daily meal that includes milk and a piece of meat at times. Her care for the cats is appreciated by her neighbours.
"People usually have pets like dogs, buffaloes, horses but she has kept cats as her pets. The cats do not support her in earning a livelihood, but she still keeps them. They are like family members and are free to live the way they want," said Bhikhu Sakaiah, a neighbour. Rambhiben has also christened these cats with names like Meena, Radha, Bhuri and Som. (ANI) -AJ
Muslims in Gujarat wary of polls
Godhra (Gujarat), Nov.10 (ANI): Muslims in Gujarat are reportedly cynical about the outcome of the December election in the state, as they believe that Chief Minister Narendra Modi is a dreaded figure, a man not to be trusted. The next of kith and kin of the 2002 Gujarat riot victims are particularly disillusioned with the State Government's dillydallying in providing them justice. These two factors have made the minority community quite apprehensive and apathetic to the outcome of election results. "In 2002 my father, uncle and cousin were allegedly killed in riots and there is no trace of them since then. In 2002 there were elections and there will be elections again in 2007, the government will come and go, but it has no bearing on our fate," said Tahir Qasim Bari, a member of minority community. While Tahir waits for justice in vain there are others like Shaukat who feel that violence may be again repeated to score brownie points before the state election. "The memories of the 2002 riots are still fresh in our minds. In the forthcoming election we fear that what happened in 2002 may again be repeated," said Shaukat another member of the minority community.
The 2002 riots created a wedge between the majority and minority community in the state. But now it is time to heal wounds, the two communities are now trying to close the gaps and live together. The minority people in the state have no ill feelings against the majority population but fears that the government may play the communal card to fulfil its own unscrupulous political agenda. "The Gujarati community especially Hindus, want to segregate the Muslims or maintain a distance from them. But the government wants to create a wedge so that they can get the majority votes," said Sayed Oman, a member of the minority community. The terms of the legislative assemblies of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh are due to expire on December 26, 2007 and March 9, 2008 respectively.
The first phase of elections in Gujarat will be held on December 11, 2007 and second phase will be on December 16, 2007 and the counting of votes for both the phases will be on December 23, 2007. Over 36 million voters are eligible to elect the 182-member assembly in Gujarat. The BJP had faced criticism for failing to control Hindu mobs across Gujarat in February and March after 59 Hindus were burnt to death in a train by a suspected Muslim mob. More than 1,000 people, mainly minority Muslims, died in the riots. (ANI) -AJ
Blindfolded bikers preach people against superstition in Gujarat
Friday, November 9, 2007
Porbander (Gujarat), Nov. 8 (ANI): Members of a social awareness forum on Thursday took out a rally of blindfolded motorists to dispel superstitions related to observing Kali Chaudas, the 14th day of Ashwin month of Hindu calendar, devoted to the worship of Goddess Maha Kali.
About a hundred members of the Bharat Jan Vigyan Jatha, a local voluntary organisation, covered their eyes with a piece of cloth to draw public attention towards prevailing blind faith and myths related to "Kali Chaudas" observed on the eve of Diwali.
"Today, we organised a rally in our city, which was basically meant to dispel all the blind beliefs regarding Kali Chaudas. Our blindfolded and masked members rode on scooters. We want to show that the stories of black spirit and ghosts are all myths," asserted Jaichand Pandya, Chairman, Bharat Jan Vigyan Jatha.
Organisers enlightened the people to realise as to what is theology and not to confuse it with hoodwinking tricksters who spread superstitious ideas in the society.
Many individuals take part in yajna and Siddhi rituals performed by Tantriks (sorcerers) at crematoria at midnight on the contention of controlling spirits and gaining supernatural powers.
"I don't believe in any kind of magic. And that is why I participated in this rally to educate my peers to dispel their fears and irrational belief regarding the festival. Riding bikes blindfolded is no magic, it is just a technique." said Sweta Shringala, a participant in the rally.
Kali Chaudas is a day devoted to the worship of Goddess Maha Kali. It is believed that on this day Kali killed the wicked Raktavija. Also referred to as Narak-Chaturdashi, Kali Chaudas is day to abolish laziness and evil which create hell in our life and shine light on life. (ANI) --MP

A mass marriage for Godhra riots victims
Wednesday, November 7, 2007
AA: Vadodara (Gujarat), Nov 6 (ANI): Sixteen Muslim couples, belonging to the families of 2002 Godhra communal riots, have tied the nuptial knot at a mass marriage ceremony in Vadodra. The credit for this mass marriage goes to Adarsh Seva Trust (AST), a city-based voluntary body, that is determined to assist the victims of the 2002 riots. Aziz Dangiwala, President of the AST said the mass marriage came as a blessing to the victims. "These couples are from different riot-affected regions of Gujarat. Most of them are yet to be rehabilitated and have been staying in relief camps," he said. The event also reduced the financial burden that these couples would have had to incur in a traditional marriage. "Mass marriage is an excellent concept that will help avoid excess expenditure. I think it would immensely please Allah if Muslims adopt this practice," said Professor J. S. Bandukwala, member of the AST. Over 1,000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed in Gujarat in retaliation for the burning alive of 59 Hindu pilgrims on February 27,2002 at Godhra town by a suspected Muslim mob. For the grooms, the mass marriage presented an opportunity to begin life afresh. "I lost all my property and my house during the 2002 riots," said Sheikh Abdul, a groom. "I am happy that I am starting a new life. I had to suffer much pain and tension during the riots. I don't want to remember the agony," said Ashiyana Bano, a bride The marriages were solemnised on Monday in accordance with Islamic rituals and the guests on the occasion were treated to a decent austere feast. Each couple was gifted with furniture, utensils, clothes and other gifts by the self-help group. (ANI)
Allahabad lawyers protest against emergency in Pakistan
Tuesday, November 6, 2007
Allahabad, Nov 6 (ANI): Lawyers in Allahabad staged a protest today condemning the crackdown on their Pakistani counterparts following President Pervez Musharraf's proclamation of emergency in Pakistan.Lawyers marched through the streets shouting slogans and burning an effigy of Musharraf. "We condemn the dictatorship imposed by Musharraf on November 3. He has suspended the Chief Justice. We also condemn the atrocities on our counterparts in Pakistan, including their arrest," said Naveen Singh, a lawyer. Hundreds of lawyers and opposition politicians have been detained since the imposition of emergency in the country on Saturday, a move seen as a design to pre-empt a Supreme Court's expected unfavourable ruling on his re-election as president. On Monday, police used teargas against stone-throwing lawyers in Lahore, and wielded batons to break up another protest by dozens of their counterparts outside the High Court in Karachi. Pakistan authorities had already arrested 400 to 500 political opponents and opposition lawyers as a "preventive" measure. Several judges were being held incommunicado at their homes after they refused to back emergency. Among them was Pakistan's sacked Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, who became a symbol of resistance to Musharraf's rule after defying pressure to quit in March. The President subsequently reinstated him. Chaudhry was sacked and replaced after he and eight other judges refused to endorse the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO), declaring it unconstitutional. Meanwhile, Pakistan police continued its crackdown by arresting more lawyers in Lahore today. (ANI)
