Instead of utilising the hi-tech equipment provided to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), their officers outsource the job of cleaning manholes to the downtrodden Dalit tribe called 'Valmik'. As per regulations, AMC has hi-tech equipment and no workers are supposed to enter the sewage pipes or manholes. A permanent Global Positioning System (GPS) station to be set up here was pending with the Godhra collectorate and now it is pending with the forest department. The three rifts are active in Gujarat and are responsible for earthquakes in the state. Once the network is established with 70 temporary and four permanent stations, one can study the build-up of stress in specific regions of the state and identify the locations of future earthquakes. A permanent GPS station acts as a reference point for measuring changes recorded at the temporary station. After getting annual records of the stress build-up in the regions, geologists make observations of the readings to identify the locations and intensity of earthquakes. GPS networks have already been successful in earthquake-prone regions like California and Japan. MSU geologists add that experts in California and Japan, who have a network of 10,000 such permanent GPS stations, have already succeeded in predicting earthquakes.
