Corneal blindness more seen in children
Tuesday, August 30, 2005 | AY

A recent study on blindness in the State showed that majority of the approximately 40,000 corneal blind people in Gujarat are children below 12 years. Natural causes for the disease include lack of Vitamin A, but corneal blindness among children is mostly caused due to injury by a pointed object, crackers and at times infections. In several cases, lime used with tobacco also damages the cornea, a common occurrence in our country. After cataract, corneal failure is the major reason for blindness in the country. The State Health Department is organising a number of programmes at government-run hospitals to counsel parents about the disease and to bring awareness about donating eyes. Doctors say that though Gujarat is the top eye donour in the country, it is yet not enough to meet the need of the total number of blind.

Dreams of a young man shattered
Monday, August 29, 2005 | AY

Hatim Kathiria’s dreams of becoming a software sultan and a U.S citizen brought him from Dahod, Gujarat to Dallas, Texas in 2003. Like some recent immigrants, he took the shortcut to success and citizenship, joining the U.S Army in 2004 in the hope that a stint in the forces would fund a college scholarship and the American dream on his return. 23-year old Hatim’s hopes ended in the battle zone of Baghdad. He was killed in a rocket attack, the U.S Department of Defence announced, making him the second U.S soldier of Indian origin to die in Iraq. In November 2003, Sergeant Uday Singh, 21, became the first such Indian-American victim. The death of Army Specialist Hakim Kathiria and Sergeant Uday Singh, has a remarkable sub-text. One was a Muslim and the other a Sikh, and together with Lt. Neil Prakash, who recently returned from Iraq after winning a Silver Star for courage under fire, they represent the very best of India’s secular traditions.

I didn't find any government effort to resolve flood victims' problems," he added.

But the addition of an amphitheatre, a dream once shared by reputed dramatists like C C Mehta himself, will finally help Barodians get a new venue. A Rs 10 lakh grant from GIPCL financed the construction of the circular amphitheatre. VMC believes that the concept of an amphitheatre situated in the midst of a public park will definitely click, more so as it will be leased at nominal charges on no-profit-no-loss basis. The amphitheatre can seat around 500 people and is around 100 ft wide.

Wednesday, August 24, 2005 | AY

He said it was saddening to accept that like drinking water, the BSF was never considered to be a one of the basic problems being faced by the country since Indepedence to 1980. Mr Kumar said the first nation-wide sanitation program was launched by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1984 which improved the situation to the extent that by 2003 nearly 34 per cent of the population had in-house BSF. However, if the scenario of only rural India's was taken into consideration then only 20 per cent of the population was covered so far.

Tenth planet supposed to be discovered
Sunday, August 21, 2005 | AY

With the discovery of the tenth planet in the solar system, there are varied responses among Indian astrologers as to wondering how to include it in their system for making predictions. As the world of science debates whether the object discovered by NASA and lying farther than Pluto is a planet or not, some astrogers say it will surely have its place in the horoscope, just the way a new family member gets his or her name registered for a ration card. But some astrologers refuse to concede any credit for discovering planet "2003 UB313" to Mike Brown and his team of scientists funded by NASA. Only Western astronomers have come to know about it now. According to our (Hindu) scriptures, there are 12 planets in our solar system and two more remain to be discovered.

Scientist unable to generate weather data
Saturday, August 20, 2005 | AY

Cameras aboard two Insat satellites orbiting the earth for several years have never been fully used for weather analysis because of software glitches on the ground, space and weather scientists said. The cameras are on the Insat-2E launched in April 1999 and on the Insat-3A launched over two years ago. Software to analyse the images from the cameras can generate information about cloud, wind and moisture patterns. The satellites have been transmitting images to the ground, but software trouble has frustrated attempts to use these images to extract data, scientists in the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The IMD had tried to develop the software for the camera on the Insat-3A on its own, but had outsourced the task for the Insat-2E to a Canadian company. Accusing the IMD of lack of planning, independent scientists also question the decision to outsource the software rather than to collaborate with Isro which has the expertise. Scientists at the Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad, have successfully used the images to study vegetation and other features on the ground. IMD sources said it decided to outsource the software because expertise to develop it did not exist in India. But senior scientists say SAC, Ahmedabad, has developed software for satellite image processing.

A new technology increases knee implant longevity
Saturday, August 20, 2005 | AY

For all those suffering from knee related problems, there is a good news, a new technique of computer-assisted knee replacement using satellite navigation technology is introduced. The technique promises to provide 100 per cent precision by eliminating human error thereby increasing implant longevity (20-30 years). Vaidya is the first to introduce this technology in Gujarat at his clinic in Vadodara. Satellite navigation technology is usually used in aircrafts to precisely identify the starting point and destination of journey. Even two degrees of inaccuracy can cause the aircraft to land at Delhi instead of Mumbai. Using this technology, the computer, with the help of infra-red camera and trackers maps out the journey from the arthritic knee to perfect knee. By combining digital images of the femur and tibia with an implant-specific software package, the computer hardware can track the precise position of the patient’s leg, the implant and the surgeon’s instrument at all times during the surgery. The surgeon has chance to verify and rectify the alignment of prosthesis with accuracy of 0.5mm to 0.5 degree.

No shortage of schools, still low literacy rate
Tuesday, August 16, 2005 | AY

Gujarat is not even among the top ten states when it comes to education indices. Count of the number of primary schools in the 18,000-odd villages of Gujarat was 40,425 in 2003-04, up from 37,551 in the previous year. What acts as a major deterrent here is the sharp social division. While the upper and middle classes send their children to school, those in the lower strata of society prefer to put them to work. Social movements like the Jan Vigyan Jattha in Gujarat have failed to lure more children into schools. This particular movement has not been actively associated with primary schooling. Many initiatives like Kanya Kelavni Rath yatras are undertaken across villages to create social awareness and to ensure enrolment of eligible children, especially girls. Additionally, the government has launched a drive for construction of rooms in schools, under which 28,000 rooms have been constructed over the past three years. The government has also appointed 80,000 new primary teachers.

Wednesday, August 10, 2005 | AY

During the slow but steady decline of textile mills in Ahmedabad, around 1,25,000 workers were rendered jobless. They lost their permanent source of income. In its urge to showcase Gujarat’s big business scenario, the Modi regime has turned a blind eye to the plight of thousands of workers. The main problem of workers in Gujarat is the ‘casualisation of labour’, from permanent jobs or unemployment to temporary jobs. After the once flourishing textile mills were gradually closed, most workers started working as daily wage labourers in the powerlooms and construction industry, even as real estate boomed, often in the same sites as the old mills. Some of them got three-wheelers under government schemes and that is one reason why Ahmedabad has one of the highest number of autos in India (around 65,000).

It warned him that if suitable steps were not taken by August 22, when the matter comes up for hearing next, he would have to present himself before the court to explain the position. Village in a tough situation
Monday, August 8, 2005 | AY

Villagers in a drought-prone region of Gujarat find themselves in a peculiar situation, they have a reservoir full of water, but cannot use it. In a pre-independence arrangement in Sakarda, a tribal village near here and 190 km from the principal Gujarat city of Ahmedabad, railway authorities have been denying the villagers access to the only water source for the last seven decades. The railways had acquired the river belt near the village to construct a dam in 1930 on the river Paat. The "Kaali Dam" was meant to meet water requirements of the railway colony in the town of Dahod. Chausala, Kaaligam, Sarda and Gultora have implemented local irrigation schemes as the river belt in that region was not under the railway's jurisdiction.

Rail freight corridor- Gujarat asks for a dfferent route
Saturday, August 6, 2005 | AY

Instead of considering the route between Delhi and Mumbai through Mathura, Kota, Ratlam and Vadodara, the Gujarat Government has asked the Railway Ministry to consider a different route of the proposed Delhi-Mumbai dedicated rail freight corridor. Gujarat, which is closer to the Northern hinterland by about 300 km compared with the JNPT and NSICT terminals in Mumbai, has several minor ports that handle 20-30 per cent of cargo throughput of the country's various ports. Thus, if the dedicated rail freight corridor is built in a manner that the Gujarat ports such as Mundra, Kandla, Pipavav, Bedi, Porbandar, Dholera, among others are connected through short feeder routes then the economic viability of the rail freight corridor would also increase. While the route via Kota and Ratlam passes through urban centres, the suggested route through Palanpur, Ahmedabad covers relatively rural areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat. As a result, land acquisition would be much cheaper, easier and result in quicker construction of the rail route
